Now that you are aware (from reading ‘What’s pH got to do with it”) of how your mouth can become too acidic, you can make educated choices about what you eat and what you can do to balance your oral pH.
The great news here is that you don’t have to ignore your ‘sweet tooth’! There are many products available that satisfy those cravings without compromising your health. If you or a family member have a medical condition or take medications that cause dry mouth, Salese lozenges will help restore the moist mouth feeling, decrease acidity and is said to decrease cravings for sugar! Our favorite candy is the Basic Bite – a chocolate chew that tastes similar to a tootsie roll – it both decreases acidity and encourages the growth of helpful bacteria. Xylitol is also a great preventive aid – you should try to get 6 grams per day. Epic 100% xylitol sweetened gum and mints are a great tasting way to get your daily allowance. There are also Glylic lollipops and hard candies available that have specific antimicrobial properties against cavity causing bacteria.
Now that we’ve got your attention by still allowing you to have sweet things, here are a couple of other strategies that are causing a big impact on our patient’s pH levels. First, is brushing with baking soda – it’s best if you can make a paste with water, but if you don’t like the taste, try applying toothpaste to your brush first then dipping it in a little baking soda. Be sure to brush your tongue, too! It is best if this is done at night and you don’t eat or drink afterward. Next, we encourage the use of an Oral-B electric toothbrush. Finally, it is wise to increase the amount of arginine in your diet – eat more spinach, soy, seafood and nuts. There is also a protein in dairy products that is very beneficial.
These are SMALL CHANGES that will make a BIG IMPACT in getting your mouth pH balanced, maintaining that balance and AVOIDING CAVITIES! Below is a list of websites where you can purchase and learn more about the products listed. For your convenience, we also carry most of these products in our office, and sell them at the same or less than the retail price on the websites.
